Whenever I get the chance, preferably just after lunch I tilt my head back, close my eyes and doze off for 10-15 minutes. And yes I do that when I am at work (during lunch break). After my power nap, I go from feeling sleepy, tired, drowsy to feeling energetic and ready to go again!
In fact, benefits for napping are backed up by science! No wonder why Google, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Cisco, Nike, etc all allow nap time for employees. They even have designated areas to nap! Who wouldn’t love to nap on the nap pod below?
Benefits:
- Increase alertness: Staff meeting, or project deadling coming up? Boost your alertness with a short nap.
- Adjust your attitude: Napping is miraculous in killing crankiness and could improve your mood.
- Memory improvement: A nap can make remembering facts learned earlier that day easier.
“Daytime naps can be one way to treat sleep deprivation. You can get incredible benefits from 15 to 20 minutes of napping. You reset the system and get a burst of alertness and increased motor performance” Dr. Sara Mednick in her book, Take a Nap! Change Your Life.
Fun fact: The Japanese even have a word for strategically sleeping on the job: “inemuri,” roughly translated to “sleeping while present.”
How Long: Experts say 20 minutes is the ideal nap duration to increase energy and alertness. More than this increases the risk of grogginess!
Hope you can persuade your employer to allow nap times so you reap all the benefits
