I’ve spent so many years wondering what Santorini would be like, till now. Not known for its beaches, we’d always put going there off, as if we don’t get enough of the sea in Cyprus! Summers came and went and this Cycladic island was never really be an option. We knew it was a romantic island and a great port of call for cruisers of the Med as well as the perfect honeymoon destination. This June, we had a change of heart and decided to go for it and all I can say is, we are definitely going back for more.

Santorini, Pinterest’s picture popping magic doesn’t even come close to revealing the magic of Oia, the place to savour the sunset. Close your eyes, try to picture trademark Cycladic architecture built on a cliff, with plunge pools illuminating a light coloured blue overlooking the med sea and you still won’t get it right.

A couple of lame excuses resulted in us wising up to what was waiting for us. The whole experience was made even more special as we had some super great friends join us.

We chose to stay in Oia, not in Fira (the island’s capital). Although our hotel, ‘Myst Boutique Hotel’ (a newly built, highly recommended 3 star) was not on the cliff and not directly overlooking the sea, it was only a 10-minute walk to the main square in Oia. Therefore, we were not sandwiched between other hotels, we had our privacy and got to enjoy the hotel with our friends. The grounds, the food, the staff and the rooms were fantastic! It was hard to say goodbye. The hotel basically had a vibe and we all felt it.

Santorini is definitely the place to practice your photography skills – so much beauty to see and click to keep. Anyway, a 3-night getaway is ample time to spend on the island. Between lazing about around the pool, relaxing, watching the glorious sunsets and then having dinner in exquisite restaurants set on glorious cliffs, is what truly sealed it for me.

Restaurants and places we went to:

Oia (the place to be too watch the sunset)

Mystique Asian

Tavern Katina

Cavo Tagoo

Fira

Describing Santorini in a nutshell : busy but quiet, beautiful but raw, spectacular but simple, expensive but worth it, sunny but windy. Romantic.
