A salt scrub is great for exfoliating and moisturizing your skin. Whether or not we’re stuck at home , I’ve done my research and I’ve figured out that making your own salt scrubs with a few simple ingredients is a piece of cake. You could also make them colouful by using colorants and fragrances  to give them relaxing or invigorating scents.

There are some basic steps on creating your own DIY salt scrub:

  1. Select your salt: The salt in a salt scrub is basically used as an exfoliant that removes dead skin and leaves your skin smooth and soft. You could use many types of salt in your scrub, such as table salt, sea salt, Himalayan salt, Dead Sea salt, or Epsom salt. Make sure that you will choose finely ground salt over coarse salt, because fine salt is better at exfoliating. You can also combine different types of salts together in one scrub.

  1. Select your carrier oil: The carrier oil is the base that will keep the salt scrub together and will moisturize your skin. My advice is to avoid any thick consistency oils that would make it impossible to be washed away easily. Here are some examples of carrier oils you could use:
  • Grape seed and jojoba oils (thin and very faint aromas);
  • Sweet almond oil (medium and a mild aroma);
  • Vegetable olive (medium and little aroma);
  • Coconut oil (medium and a very strong, sweet aroma);
  • Peanut/ walnut/ hazelnut oils (thin to medium and nutty aromas).

  1. Add some fragrances: If you want to change the aroma of your scrub and make it a bit more interesting, you could add fragrances and essential oils. You could pick one (or more) from the following:
  • Citrus oils (lemon, orange, and grapefruit) are fresh, energizing, and summery;
  • Flower oils (ylang-ylang, rose, and geranium) are sweet and summery.
  • Peppermint and cinnamon are invigorating oils that are great for Christmas and winter scrubs;
  • Lavender, vanilla and chamomile are some very calming fragrances.

  1. Pour them in a glass jar: Get yourself a glass jar with an airtight lid n order to store your DIY salt scrub. Pour the salt into the jar, followed by the carrier oil. Finally, add some drops of essential oils or fragrances until you achieve the aroma and strength you want. Stir the mixture well before using.

The exact ingredients of a basic salt scrub are:

Basic Salt Scrub

  • 1 cup (300 g) salt
  • ½ cup (118 ml) oil
  • 5 – 15 drops essential oils of your choice

And this is some extra help for the more “complicated” ones:

Citrus Salt Scrub

  • ½ cup (118 g) fine sea salt
  • ½ cup (118 ml) oil
  • 1 teaspoon (2 g) citrus zest

Coffee Salt Scrub

  • 2 cups (472 g) fine sea salt
  • ½ cup (27 g) instant coffee
  • ½ cup (100 g) coconut oil

Wet your skin, rub the salt scrub on your skin and rinse it off under running water. Repeat about twice a week!

xoxo,

Andrea
