I have told you all before, haven’t I, about my part time regular job that has kept me sane for 17 years. Well, what I haven’t told you is that the family business, aka, The English Learning Centre has partnered up with the successful Stephan Roussounis, an expert in the field, to establish English in Cyprus.
Sun. Sea. English. |
What is this? Who are we? What do we do? You may well be asking yourselves, and quite rightly so.
In Brief:
English in Cyprus is a brand name that offers English language learning to local but mainly to overseas students. Interestingly enough people travel from all over the world to learn English with us and have a holiday into the bargain. An interesting fact – we have brought students from more than 25 countries to study here with us. A second interesting fact – 40% of our students return to us year after year.
Housed at the English Learning Centre, it operates during the morning from Monday to Friday all year round. No need to go to the UK for an English language learning programme – we have everything you need and more right on your doorstep.
Founded in 2007, English in Cyprus is licensed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, approved by the Cyprus Tourist Board and a founder member of ELSAC (the English Language Schools Association of Cyprus).
What is it that we actually do?
We kill two birds with one stone, metaphorically speaking! We teach English to international students/tourists who come to Cyprus for a holiday and to refresh, improve or learn English. Our students enjoy all the beauties Cyprus has to offer and go back home having brushed up on their English.
Did you know that a staggering number of people (over 2,000,000) of all ages, aims and backgrounds travel outside their country to learn English?
WHY?
Here are 10 good reasons why people want to learn English:
1. English is the most widely-spoken language in the world
2. English will open up more opportunities to you
3. English will make you more desirable to employers
4. English gives you access to the most powerful universities in the world
5. English is the language of some of the world’s best literature
6. English is the language of business
7. English is the language of technology
8. English is the language of popular culture
9. English gives you wider access to knowledge
10. English is a fantastic intellectual language
Light years behind Malta, who have considered this tourist product a main industry for the last 60 years, we are now trying to make up for lost time. Many countries in the world identify with Cyprus as being a tourist destination. It is only when they arrive on the island that they perceive the sophisticated infrastructure, they acknowledge the cultural diversity, and they absorb the historical heritage that is on offer. It is inconceivable to most that we speak English fluently, and that the level of English is extremely high, much higher in fact than in Malta. Yet Malta is the 6th most popular destination for English language learning in the world! Ahead of Malta is, of course, the UK, Ireland, Canada, the USA and Australia. So where does this leave us? Huffing and puffing and making superhuman efforts to catch up, and catch up we will!
What is ironic, is that we exceed all the characteristics and customer appeal that Malta possesses. Better English, better teachers, better facilities, better infrastructure etc. So, why are we so far behind in this new tourist product? It’s simple really. No one ever thought of it, or, if they did, the hugely expensive, up- hill struggle to get known out there is a big deal and it needs some hefty political string-pulling.
For the last 10 years, master English in Cyprus (formerly known as Malvern House Cyprus and the Language Explorer) has been hard at it, aggressively marketing in both European and CIS markets, to establish Cyprus as the new great English learning destination. And, yes, it is working, we are growing and there is a steady demand.
