You know what’s a real nightmare? Having to pick up clothes for work every single day. I mean, I wish I could go to work in my pyjamas or at least my college sweatshirts but I’m afraid that’s not possible.

Dressing like an adult has been a first-world-problem to me since the day I finished college. My closet was full of casual clothes and little black dresses, which were most definitely not appropriate for work; it took me ages to figure out what consists of an ideal work wardrobe and I’m about to share it all with you!

  1. Black blazer:In order to build a simple, yet fabulous wardrobe, you have to invest in key pieces. A black blazer is a classic gem, always in fashion and literally for every occasion! It transforms any piece of clothing into a professional looking outfit. Choose the blazer that suits your style: oversized, classic, short or long and match it with literally everything!
  2. Cigarette pants: Honestly, nothing can possibly go wrong with a pair of cigarette pants. You can match it with a casual white T-shirt, a knit, a smart shirt! Also, if you’re not in the mood for heels, this kind of pants match perfectly with sneakers or oxford shoes! Thank me later!
  3. Basic knits: Basic knits will keep you sane on Monday mornings, when you’re at a complete loss for shirts. Having a few black, white, nude and blue knit tops in your closet will solve all your problems: match them with a light jacket or a blazer and make your outfit look effortlessly smart.
  4. The perfect jeans: A pair of perfect jeans is a key piece in a work wardrobe (if, of course, you’re allowed to wear jeans to work)! The perfect jeans for work are mostly in a darker shade of blue, high waisted, not too tight and definitely not ripped. Choose the perfect pair of shoes and a very nice top to match.
  5. Shirtdresses: I’ve read online that “a shirtdress is perfect for dressier office environments—perfect with a pair of pumps, or worn over the shoulders as a jacket with the sleeves rolled up for more fashion-forward office environments”and I’ve realised that I don’t have enough shirtdresses in my wardrobe. They are modern, chic, easy to wear and super fashionable pieces.
  6. All neutral everything: If your wardrobe is a newbie, you should buy everything neutral. You are picking clothes for work, hence you want to wear them at least twice during the month, especially if you only have four decent outfits! With this being said, I guarantee that the super expensive bright yellow knit you’ve seen online, is not ideal for work. People will remember you wearing it and you’ll find it will make it very difficult  for you to adapt it in your work outfits.

Building a work wardrobe is not easy; it’s hard and pricey. You have to look for pieces that re-wearing them the following week wouldn’t make you look weird but at the same time you have to stay true to your personal style. Your clothes at work have to be smart but comfy, chic but not sexy, cute but not too childish!

I told you it’s a nightmare!!!

xoxo,

Andrea
