While everybody’s buzzing about the rise of fashion bloggers and stylish social media stars, there’s a number of undisputable fashion icons that have withstood the test of time – the women of the royal family. With things like the Kate Middleton effect becoming a well-documented phenomenon and the prompt sell out of most of Meghan Markle coats, there’s no denying that people are looking to the ladies for sartorial cues. However, Princess Diana’s iconic style has had the biggest impact to this day. As young as I was back then, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on my mum’s newly minted HELLO magazine to flick through Princess Di’s choice of outfits for the week. From her jewellery to her footwear, I simply couldn’t get enough of her. She was deffo my original style crush and seeing an Insta post of her iconic moment recently on Dodi’s yacht wearing the turquoise swimming suit (which we’d so wear today) I had to do a blog on her. More than 20 years have passed since her death, yet, her style is just as influential and relevant today as it was decades ago.

Lyst editor Charlotte Austin crowned Princess Di the winner and said, ‘Based on our research, we believe Princess Diana is the most powerful royal fashion influencer of all time. While we’re seeing phenomenal spikes in demand for all things Meghan-endorsed right now, Diana’s lasting legacy as a trend setter and continual source of inspiration for generations of designers and fashion lovers makes The Diana Effect an incredibly powerful fashion force.’ She really was the ultimate trendsetter! Do you remember her necklace/tiara styling?

Just look at fashion’s latest wave of “It” girls, and you’ll see that their most recent outfits draw inspiration from several of Princess Diana’s iconic style moments from the ’80s and ’90s. The chunky sneakers, the bike shorts, the obsession with polka dots — all of her staples are trending once again. The people’s princess was also known for her covetable collection of pearl accessories, whether she was wearing a show-stopping tiara or a stacked choker that we’re still obsessed with. We’ve seen them make a comeback recently with embellished shoes and accessories saturating the sphere.
