Flu here, flu there, flu everywhere! I’ve got it, the neighbour’s got it, everybody’s bloody got it! Unless you become a hermit, it’s hard to avoid the beastly germs that are floating around giving us headaches, temps, coughs and sneezes at this time of year. The only way about it is to boost your immune system to make sure you bounce back to health speedily and with as little discomfort as possible.

Did you know that when we cough or sneeze, small droplets are expelled at a speed of almost 100mph? So if you think you can escape the seasonal lurgies doing the rounds, think again. It’s these droplets that are guilty of spreading the flu virus. But while it’s almost impossible to stay out of the line of fire, you CAN try to glide through it.

To boost your immunity, limit your intake of refined sugar, caffeine and alcohol and avoid undue stress. I know this is easier said than done but…where needs must…Get plenty of sleep your body needs it for wellbeing – studies show that people who regularly get less than six hours a night are three times more likely to succumb when exposed to the cold-causing rhinovirus than those who sleep longer. Eat foods that will boost your system: Button mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, sweet potato, low fat yoghurt, Elderberry, drink tea (green, white or black) garlic, chicken soup (or store bought or homemade) pomegranate juice, ginger. Use a tissue to stop your sneezes and coughs spreading. Wash your hands well and use hand sanitizer and pump yourself up with food items mentioned above and vitamins.

STAY IN BED if you do catch the flu, your body needs to rest and sleep. I speak from experience and that is exactly what I have been doing for the last couple of days. Staying warm, avoiding temperature changes and drinking plenty of hot healthy drinks such as ginger and lemon teas. You need to keep hydrated!
