Have sequins ever *not* been on trend? Perhaps not, but they were so prevalent at this month’s shows that they need a write up on their own.
Sequins may be a bit of Christmas cliché, but that doesn’t dull their impact – they are still the –go –to item for any party winner. The ladies of the Golden Globes red carpet all seemed to get the memo that classic glitz and glamour are back en vogue. Sequins were all over the carpet, with everyone from Nicole Kidman’s long-sleeved red sequin Michael Kors gown to Keri Russell Wearing Monique Lhuillier. Hollywood’s actresses took their style cues from the women of Hollywood’s past and we should do the same!
Dresses with sequins were also a huge look from the spring 2019 fashion trends from Paris Fashion Week, and when you get them in gold and silver, you certainly feel like a princess. More is more this season, and brightly glittering sweater dresses, fringed jackets and sparkling skirts are all part of the magic.
Sequins look glamorous and sexy, and – most importantly – do all the hard work for you, so all you need is a pair of skimpy sandals to look pow wow! This is what you want in your party wear: an unfussy piece that instantly hits the spot, and doesn’t require too much faffing around to create a ‘look’.
Avoid buying large ‘penny sequins’ sequins that are the size of the discs buy small. Say no to nudes, black is fine, but a bit of silver and gold boldness is much better. You don’t only have to go for a full head-to-toe punch of colour, try Rixo’s wrap blouse with elegant tailored trousers or jeans.
A bit of sparkle can flatter all shapes and sizes, but thankfully, the days of the bodycon sequinned sheath are over. Details like Attico’s blouson sleeves or Retrofête’s satin mini dress will fend off any ‘flasher’ connotations, plus you’ll be comfortable all night.
When accessorising, it’s best to lean into the glitz, like Kylie Minogue. Where a plain black court or box clutch can look flat and suck the life out of your party piece, a simple sandal in shimmering metallics or a frivolous feathered bag will really make it pop.
The old attitude of saving your sparkle for after-dark has been replaced by a new appreciation for daytime glitz. So you can throw that trench on with blue jeans and trainers, or style that skirt with a rollneck jumper and boots – because sequins are for life, not just for Christmas.
