Weather changes bring on the dreaded wardrobe re vamp and thankfully I’ve got round to doing my kids closets. A little late but Autumn has just hit Cyprus! I now have that ‘I’m on top of the world’ feeling – unfortunately it’s a ‘catharsis’ that needs to take place twice annually! The thought of doing it before is a nightmare and is put off until push comes to shove.

The teacher in me is a huge believer in organization and order, I have to admit that organizing my children’s wardrobes is a real chore but it goes with the territory as we mothers know. Living a mad, rushed routine, wanting to squeeze in more hours to each day, I allocated one week- night per child’s closet to ease my way through the clothes jungle I found myself facing. It may have been a wise decision on my part but my elder two who are grown up and have an opinion on every item of clothing drove me up the wall. Advice – do this without witnesses, be it children or husband!

Two steps to making your lives easier:

Remove everything!

Sounds tedious, I know, but it helps sort out the ‘wants’ the ‘don’t wants’ and the ‘not sures’. As you pull everything out, start sorting into these categories. Put all the clothes on the bed and work your way through every item

With my little one (4 years old) I followed the method below. For my 11-year-old, I emptied out one zone at a time.

Sort!

Having pulled out all the clothes from the closet or from a section of it, start sorting:

What gets put back; the right size and just- about- right one for another season.

What is given to a friend/family member; pass-me-downs

What is given away to charity.

What is stored for baby brother or sister– here storage boxes are required, I tend to use large stackable plastic ones with lids.

What is trash.

Once clothes are organised, folded or hung, section them off into zones which suit you and your child. I tend to store the current season’s clothes lower down for convenience sake.

It is at this point you see what your child needs stocking up on. I realised they needed a bit of everything, thank goodness we have Christmas and birthdays coming up – lessens the financial burden for mummy and daddy.

So, if you haven’t got round to doing the dreaded wardrobes, plunge in attack arrange and dispose and then get Santa’s list ready!
