A long held tradition in America and the UK, Halloween is celebrated each year on October 31, this year it is on Wednesday, October 31. It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts and witches. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating sweet treats.

Ok, so for a few years now we seem to have adopted this tradition rather more mildly than elsewhere. It is not hyped up the way it was when I lived in the UK. I was brought up to anticipate it excitedly. Here in Cyprus, though, it is not played out to its full extent but nonetheless it is here, and it is here to stay!

WMC is here to get you spooked and ready to think Halloween!

Have you…

  • got your pumpkin ideas ready? For the past couple of years, I’ve tried my best to carve out my children’s pumpkins, unfortunately not resulting in the impressive version they could show off to their friends! This year, no carving for me! I’ve been inspired by these:

these carved ones are an inspiration too:

  • thought about your costumes?

Think, witches and wizards, superheroes, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones… (the sexy version too if you want) and nip down to your closest dress up shop (in Cyprus th0se would be toy shops) to choose your own or your kiddies Halloween outfits now!

  • looked into spooky Halloween deserts and sweets? These ideas are so good it’s scary!

Pomegranate Poison Spritz

Chocolate Pumpkin Cake

Boo scotti

Ghost cupcakes

  • explained the trick or treat game to the children? What do they need to do?

Children in costumes travel from house-to-house, asking for treats with the phrase “Trick or treat“. The “treat” is usually some form of candy, although in some cultures money is used instead. The “trick” refers to a threat, usually idle, to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.
