I know a lot of families in Cyprus love to go for camping for their holidays, which I think is a brilliant idea, especially if they have kids. Going camping is usually cheaper than traveling to another country and having to pay for accommodation, but it also brings the family closer together and closer to nature.
I would love to share some great zero waste alternatives if you are planning a camping trip, a picnic day or even a day at the beach this summer.
Water:
Cyprus in the summer gets extremely warm, so having plenty of fresh cold water to drink regularly is a necessity. Most people buy plastic bottles in bulk, but why not get a refillable water cooler? It’s more convenient and it keeps your water cold. You only have to buy it once and then it’s yours forever.
Don’t forget to bring your reusable water bottle too, like this one from Klean Kanteen for example, so you can refill it from the cooler.
Food:
Prepare some food from home and pack it into reusable containers. It’s as simple as that. Make sure you pack lots of fruit and snacks! And, if you are going to be cooking, then you’ll need some plates. There is always the biodegradable cardboard plate as an option. You don’t have to get the plastic ones.
Cutlery and Straws:
Please don’t waste your money on single use cutlery. Bring some from home. If you are looking into buying half a dozen, let’s say, then have a look on Etsy or Life Without Plastic. However if you need them urgently and you don’t want to order from an online shop then I’m 100% sure you can find a variety in big department stores. The same goes for straws. There are stainless steel, glass, bamboo and wooden straws, plenty of options to choose from.
Hygiene:
If you have access to fresh water for showering, then soap bars for hair and body will be the most convenient option. Keep it simple. Lush has an extensive range of zero waste shampoos. For more options on shampoos, go to my previous article.
