In the past I shared my tips on how to keep your hands looking younger for longer “How-to-keep-our-hands-looking-younger-for-longer” and moving into the colder months, it is just as important to think about what we wash our hands with as well as what we use on our hands. Colder weather can make our hands rough to the touch, dry and quite sensitive. It is also worth noting that the drier our hands are, the more aged they will look.
To protect our hands, we must look at what we use to wash our hands with and in the colder months, I step up to more protective and comforting ingredients. The main ingredient I look for is shea butter and the perfect hand wash to use in the colder months is the L’Occitane Liquid Soaps.
In the past if someone had said, use bar soap on your hands or skin, I would have winced. The reason being is that soap dries out the skin apart from when it is with a L’Occitane soap or even better a L’Occitane liquid soap.
In a nutshell, the L’Occitane Extra Gentle soaps are a 100% vegetable base with shea butter and have a variety of fragrances from milk, verbena or lavender. They also have a selection of Bonne Mere soaps which are again carefully formulated to effectively clean the skin without drying out. The L’Occitane Liquid Soaps are enriched with shea butter, made from vegetable oils and free from synthetic ingredients. What sets L’Occitane’s Shea Butter range apart is that they harvest it themselves. They work with several thousands of women in Burkina Faso to develop a sustainable fair trade Shea Butter supply chain. So not only does my skin feel and smell fantastic when using L’Occitane products, in a small way, I am helping and supporting those women.
In the shea butter liquid soap options, you have the choice of verbena or lavender and there are eco-friendly refills available now too.
My tip for you this week is that the liquid soap can be used on the hands and/or the body. For your hands, one pump is all you need and three to four pumps looks after your whole body so it is really economical.
Follow on with my favourite hand cream, the L’Occitane 20% Shea Butter Hand Cream or there is another option this winter, the L’Occitane 25% Shea Butter Intensive Hand Balm. I even use this on my feet; it is incredibly moisturising and it feels luxurious too.
Some other tips to bear in mind when protecting your hands over the colder months:
- Keep the water temperature luke warm. It is tempting to crank up the heat to feel the warmth but hot water strips the natural oils from the skin
- Use rubber gloves when doing the housework
- Wear gloves outside of the home when temperatures are low
- Moisturise your hands daily and as many times per day as you can
- Exfoliate your hands once or twice per week. This encourages skin renewal and helps remove the dry dead skin
- If you do a lot of day driving, then remember to keep applying your SPF even during the winter months
