Ageing is inevitable. Nearing the big 4 0, these are the steps I will take to retain healthy, youthful, glowing skin no matter what my ID card says. My aim is to age gracefully and feel proud when I look in the mirror.

Whether we like it or not, things slowdown in our 40s. It is important if wearing makeup, to clean your skin with quality products twice a day and never sleep with your make up on. Have in mind that less is more as we age! Introducing certain key steps into your routine will keep those tick tocks slow and steady:

Exfoliate more often

Skin turnover slows down as we age. We need to exfoliate more often to stimulate this process and I would recommend three times per week but because of the increased frequency, it is important that it is a relatively gentle exfoliator. If you have potent exfoliators that work at a deeper level, you would only do this once to twice per month. You can actually reduce the depth of a wrinkle by exfoliating so it must be part of your skincare routine.

Facial Oil

Getting close to 40, although I don’t have wrinkles, I have noticed a loss of glow which I am working hard on and have since introduced a vitamin C serum into my routine. To take this to the next level, using the right type of facial oil will help multiple signs of aging. For me, Decleor owns this space but there are many brands which offer some fantastic oils. Brands like Elemis, A’kin, Julep, Sarah Chapman, Caudalie, Khiel’s, Clarins and AD Skin Synergy.

Moisturiser with a Purpose and Daily SPF

If your skin is feeling dryer, then it is time to change to a richer moisturiser. If you are noticing skin slackness, then is it time to change to a lifting and plumping moisturiser.  If you are noticing lines and wrinkles, then it is time to step up to a good quality anti-aging moisturiser.
Daily SPF 30 or higher is a must. Sun exposure is responsible for most signs of visible aging. This does not necessarily mean baking yourself in the sun, UV rays from the sun which are present in normal day light cause wrinkles, pigmentation and other signs of skin aging.

Retinol is your friend

Many of us are having children later in life so if you are considering having children then do not add this step, as Retinol and other vitamin A products have shown to be harmful to unborn children.  However, if you have finished with the making of your family, then Retinol is your new friend.  Retinol is a super ingredient which fights aging. It exfoliates, corrects pigmentation, and treats lines by promoting collagen and elastin in the skin. You only use Retinol at night and again you must wear SPF 30 or higher during the day.

Use a Separate Night Cream

Night creams have a specific job to do and have a more intense level of ingredients to repair the skin as we sleep.  It is important that when we get to our 40s that we use a night cream and not our day cream twice a day.

Eye Cream it

If you have not started using an eye cream, it really is time to start. If you are already using it and you want an even better result then, use an eye serum first and then your eye cream on top.

Protect your Neck

Our neck and décolleté can often get forgotten about. A special event comes up and you want to wear that special dress and you suddenly notice creases that you didn’t notice before on the neck and across the top of the chest – panic mode on!  Keep your skin here as plump as possible by wearing SPF daily and by using collagen stimulating ingredients like Retinol and Ferulic Acid. Applying these ingredients from jaw line to bust line daily you will see maximum results.  For more information about Retinol & Ferulic Acid and their perfect combination, see my video below.
