“Balance is the key to everything. What we do, think, say, eat, feel, they all require awareness and through this awareness we can grow” – Koi Fresco

Balance is a word very often thrown around in the wine world.

But, what does it mean in the context of a wine? What exactly is a balanced wine?

For starters, balance is one of the most longed-for characteristics in wine.

It occurs when all the different components of a wine, are working in harmony. When all the parts exist in proper ratio to each another, where one will not be more prominent or lacking than the other.

The components that should be in balance are: alcohol, acidity, tannin, sweetness and fruit concentration.  Too much of one part and the wine will suffer, not enough and the wine will lacking.

The acidity in the wine, balances the sweetness from the sugar of the grapes. Too much acidity, your hair lift in end. Not enough, and your wine will feel overly sweet, flat and flabby.

Likewise, alcohol is without a doubt the reason you are buying wine in the fist place. But too much alcohol and your wine might leave you with a burning sensation in your mouth… and probably, a very dizzy brain!

Tannins are crucial in the aging process of a wine. They develop and soften over time. However, when the tannins are too strong, they may feel harsh and leave your mouth numb and dry.

Extra tip: the serving temperature of a wine can have a dramatic effect on the balance of its various elements. Always, always, always serve it the right way.

Put everything together in the proper ratio and magic happens: you get yourself a solid, well-balanced wine.

Balance is a concept which might seem very simple, but it is quite challenging. But without any doubt, where there is harmony, there is good balance.

And wine-wise, balanced wines are refreshing, elegant, can age gracefully, for longer than those that are not and can be pleasant to drink at every stage of their lives.

Enjoy the fantastically complex, yet fascinating world of wine!

See you next week!

Until then.. Strike for a glass half full !
