Hi everybody, as you already know I love reading. Now in quarantine, you’ll mostly find me consuming books, highlighting and taking notes (if I’m not babysitting).

My favorite genres are nonfiction, how-tos, self-development, biographies and memoirs. So for me taking notes and trying to apply teaching it in real life is mandatory! Otherwise, I feel as if the book hasn’t left much of an impact on me.

If you like to read, what usually happens is that you often read passively. Taking in information without questioning its validity and without making personal connections with the book, the author or its ideas!

Active reading is a technique or process of being actively engaged with the book you are reading. Here are a few ideas on how to do it:

How to actively read:

  1. Highlight phrases, quotes, paragraphs that you like or inspire you.
  2. Have a pencil nearby and don’t be afraid to write notes in your book. This is the easiest way to get back to an idea you liked.
  3. Identify new words and search for their meaning.
  4. Question an idea by pausing to think about it.
  5. Draw diagrams, flow charts or take extra notes in your notebook. This helps putting parts of a general idea together and to hone it to your liking.

I am a firm believer that reading books is an awesome way to learn new things that can have an impact on our lives only if we ACT ON IT! Knowledge + Action = Superpower

Try this out and let us know what you think!

PS: Passively reading a fiction book or a magazine works just fine. The above list is more to do with educational genres (nonfiction, how-tos, self-help, schoolbooks and biographies)
